Broadband is often defined as an 'always on' Internet connection which can access the Internet at speeds equal to, or greater than 256kbps. Whereas your typical Dial up connection speed is limited to around 56kbps. Broadband describes a wide range of frequencies that are transmitted via communication channels such as the Internet. The wider your bandwidth is, the greater the amount of information that can be transmitted simultaneously. |

ADSL is the most common broadband type available in many countries. An ADSL service enables high speed data transmission through an existing telephone line without interfering with other telephone operations (eg. A phone call can be made at the same time). ADSL speeds range from 256k to 8,000k (8Mbps) however typical speeds tend to vary considerably depending on telephone line quality and distance from telephone exchange.

ADSL2 and ADSL2+ uses next generation DSL technology. Like ADSL they use existing telephone lines but provide even quicker speeds than ADSL. ADSL 2 technology offers speeds up to 12Mbps while the ADSL2+ technology offers speeds up to 24Mbps. Once again ADSL2 and ADSL2+ speeds can vary considerably depending on line location from exchange, line quality and hardware. |
